Honda Scraps All Three EVs It Had Planned to Manufacture in the U.S.

Honda is executing a sweeping reversal of its electrification strategy. The automaker has canceled the development and planned launch of the 0 Series SUV, the 0 Series saloon, and the Acura RSX, and as a direct consequence expects to absorb a substantial financial blow in 2026.

In announcing the strategic pivot, Honda was unusually direct, citing U.S. tariff policies and the unpredictable regulatory environment surrounding American EV incentives and fossil-fuel rules. The company stated plainly that pressing forward with the three models would only generate larger financial losses over time.

Honda also pointed to shifting consumer priorities in China, where buyers are increasingly focused on software capabilities rather than traditional attributes like fuel economy and interior space. In a remarkably candid statement about its competitive standing, Honda admitted it is currently unable to offer products that deliver better value than those of newer Chinese automakers.

All three vehicles had been destined for production at Honda's Ohio manufacturing complex, which has undergone nearly two years of extensive retooling in anticipation. Rather than announcing specific replacement models, Honda issued only vague language about building a "fixed-cost structure appropriate for the scale" as it charts a future course for electrification.

To account for the canceled programs, Honda is bracing for financial losses that could reach $15.8 billion. In response to the economic pressure, a number of senior executives are voluntarily cutting or returning up to 30 percent of their monthly compensation for three months. Honda has scheduled a press conference for May of this year to unveil a revised mid- to long-term business strategy.
