Ford CEO Jim Farley is following through on a pledge that predates his tenure: the Ford Bronco will be getting a hybrid variant. Farley publicly confirmed the plan during a recent interview on the Spike's Car Radio podcast.
The announcement fits into a broader Ford ambition to electrify every model in its portfolio to some degree. "We really want to bet on all of it," Farley said. "We're going to have an all-hybrid lineup. So, Bronco, everything you can buy at Ford will have a hybrid. We'll also have [extended-range EVs] for towing."
Ford has had a hybrid Bronco on the radar since at least 2018 — well before the Bronco name was brought back from retirement and before Farley stepped into the CEO role. The push for hybridization reflects a broader pivot by the company away from a purely battery-electric strategy, as consumer appetite for full EVs has cooled.
At present, the Bronco lineup comes with three gasoline-only powertrain options. The standard Bronco is offered with either a 300-hp turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder or a 330-hp twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6, while the more capable Bronco Raptor packs a 418-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6.
The precise nature of the hybrid system Ford envisions for the Bronco remains unspecified. Farley told listeners to expect "a lot of exciting powertrains" but declined to share further details.
