Infiniti Has Two High-Performance QX80 Variants in the Pipeline

Something worth watching: Infiniti is preparing to significantly boost the performance credentials of the QX80. Automotive News is reporting that the brand is working on two new high-output variants of its flagship SUV, with both expected to arrive in the coming years.

Rather than launch both at once, Infiniti plans to roll them out sequentially. The first will be a revived Red Sport model packing roughly 600 horsepower, expected to go on sale next spring. A second, even more potent variant based on last year's QX80 Track Spec concept will follow.

According to Infiniti's product marketing director, Brian Maragno, the Red Sport trim will deliver "an additional level of performance," but it won't push the QX80 platform to its absolute ceiling. The upgrades include larger brakes, oversized red brake calipers, and red "S" badging, with 24-inch wheels also possible.

Buyers seeking the most extreme QX80 will have to be patient: the Track Spec–inspired model isn't expected until 2028. Automotive News reports this version will be rated at 680 horsepower and will feature a more aggressive body with wider fenders, along with a bespoke suspension tune and an active exhaust system.

Neither model is expected to move in large volumes. Infiniti aims to sell approximately 600 QX80 Red Sports annually, offering the performance variant in Sport and Autograph trim configurations. No sales estimate was provided for the Track Spec variant, which will clearly be the more exclusive of the two.

An Infiniti representative declined to confirm the Automotive News report when contacted by Car and Driver but provided this statement: "Infiniti is always exploring opportunities to expand our portfolio and deliver new levels of capability and craftsmanship for our customers. While we don't have any details to share today regarding future versions of QX80, our focus remains on delivering a flagship SUV that sets the highest standards for performance, technology, and luxury."
